Reata Announces Presentation of Bardoxolone Methyl Data at the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) 2010 Spring Clinical Meetings

IRVING, TX - April 18, 2010 -- Reata Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announces that data regarding bardoxolone methyl, the company's lead molecule currently in late-stage clinical trials in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes, was presented in the following posters at the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) 2010 Spring Clinical Meetings that was held from April 13th -17th in Orlando, Florida:
•    Design and Baseline Characteristics of a Phase 2b Trial to Determine Effects of Bardoxolone Methyl (BARD) in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease
•    Bardoxolone Methyl (BARD) Inhibits Inflammatory Signaling in Cultured Mesangial Cells

Bardoxolone methyl is an Antioxidant Inflammation Modulator (AIM) that activates Nrf2, thereby inducing the transcription of over 250 genes that decrease the level of oxidative stress and suppress several inflammatory mediators. In two Phase 2a studies, bardoxolone methyl was shown to produce a statistically significant increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) as well as improvements in other key markers of renal function in Stage 3b and 4 CKD patients with type 2 diabetes.

Currently, bardoxolone methyl is being studied in a double-blind pivotal Phase 2b trial in the same patient population (eGFR 20-45 mL/min/1.73m2 and type 2 diabetes) to assess the safety and efficacy of bardoxolone methyl following treatment for 6 and 12 months. Enrollment has been completed (N=227), and patients are randomized (1:1:1:1) to placebo and 25mg, 75mg, and 150mg bardoxolone methyl. Approximately 45 U.S. sites are participating in the study. The study will reach its primary endpoint in May 2010, and will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010.
