Reata Announces Presentation of Bardoxolone Methyl Data at the
American Society of Nephrology Renal Week 2009

IRVING, TX -- November 1, 2009 -- Reata Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announces the company's multiple presentations at the American Society of Nephrology's 42nd Annual Meeting & Scientific Exposition, which took place from October 27 through November 1 in San Diego, CA.

Bardoxolone methyl, Reata's lead molecule currently in Phase 2b/3 development, is an Antioxidant Inflammation Modulator (AIM) targeting Nrf2 that has been shown to improve kidney function in type 2 diabetics with chronic kidney disease.  Reata, along with investigators, highlighted bardoxolone methyl preclinical and clinical data, including results from a Phase 2a dose-ranging study that investigated the effects of oral bardoxolone methyl in Stage 3b and 4 chronic kidney disease patients.

Details of the presentations at the conference are below:

  • Bardoxolone Methyl (BARD) Improves Kidney Function in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Bardoxolone Methyl (BARD) Improves Multiple Biomarkers of Renal and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Bardoxolone Methyl (BARD) is Renoprotective in a Rat Model of Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury
  • Bardoxolone Methyl (BARD) Activates Nrf2 and Inhibits NF-kappaB in Renal Cells

Copies of the data presented can be made available by contacting Reata Pharmaceuticals (http://www.reatapharma.com/contact.asp).

About Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive loss of kidney function over a period of months or years, which can be caused by a number of conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure.  As kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in the blood and patients may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage.  CKD also increases the risk of having heart and blood vessel disease.  As kidney disease progresses, it eventually leads to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.

CKD is a highly prevalent and rapidly growing condition throughout the world.  The National Kidney Foundation estimates 26 million Americans are affected by CKD, of whom 355,000 depend on dialysis for survival.  There is a significant unmet need for new therapies to treat CKD, as current options are only able to modestly slow the progression of the disease.

About Reata

Reata is the leader in discovering and developing novel anti-inflammatory drugs targeting Nrf2, which controls the body's production of antioxidant and detoxification enzymes and has been shown to protect against a broad range of diseases associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.  Reata is developing a portfolio of AIMs for a variety of inflammation-related diseases, including renal/cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases (COPD), CNS diseases, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.  The company's most advanced program is in pivotal trials for the treatment of CKD.  For more information, visit www.reatapharma.com.
